Obsolete Context, Currently
The current definition of context is “the surroundings, circumstances, environment, background or settings that determine, specify, or clarify the meaning of an event or other occurrence.”
But the original meaning from the Latin word — a meaning which is considered obsolete now — is “to knit or bind together; to unite closely.” First Known Use: circa 1568
Though the Latin meaning is considered obsolete, I feel basing our gym philosophy on context does knit us together. Our emotional context makes us human and keeps us vulnerable to our own possibilities — and to each other’s. I’m all about witnessing yours come to fruition.
“It has been the special genius of our century to investigate things
in relation to their context, to come to see the context as formative on the thing, and, finally, to see the context as a thing itself.” -Brian ODoherty, Inside the White Cube, The Ideology of the Gallery Space.
