Opening up to Love

 In Inspiration

At the beginning of the year I shared with you how I had started the Courage Works semester with Brene Brown. She took us through suggested readings, exercises and many questions. I stayed pretty well on track, until of course, I didn’t. Contrary to what it might seem, I did find value in all of the exercises and readings and am still reading her books, in fact, I’m almost done with Rising Strong. Over the weekend I made some time to read which was really, really great. I woke up late, read some, napped a little, read a little bit more and truly enjoyed some down time. I came across the below quote from Brene Brown’s Book, Rising strong, by C.S. Lewis that really struck me.

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will come unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable. ” ¬†—C.S. Lewis

It’s a little like Mark’s speech over the weekend. It all comes down to love. As C.S. Lewis says to love is to be vulnerable. To some, it might seem safe to be all wrapped up and protected. But being brave is to be vulnerable. Opening up a space to receive and to love is powerful truly beyond measure. When we allow ourself to connect with others through love that is where growth and bonds happen. This is what I’m working on. Being more vulnerable, more open and more loving.
