The 40 Year Plan
I was talking to someone in the Whole Life Challenge a couple of weeks ago. He was getting settled in to the game, the rules, and trying to figure out how to make all the adjustments necessary to play. Then he said something interesting. He said, “I’m trying to figure out what rules I can live with for the next 40 years.”
Whoa! Stop right there. The next 40 years? It’s completely valid in one respect – he’s playing because he has the rest of his life in mind. He wants practice in the habits of health, fitness, freedom, and accountability. And it’s totally CRAZY in another respect!
Sometimes, what stops you is trying to paint a picture that is WAY too big to wrap your head around. It’s like trying to picture infinity, or what’s on the other side of the edge of the universe. Can’t do it. It’s paralyzing! It suddenly feels like a project for another day. And suddenly you can’t take action.
Trying to figure out what rules you’ll be comfortable with when you’re 80 is like trying to decide what car you’ll want to buy 20 years from now. You what they’ll look like, who you’ll be, what your life will be like, where you’ll be living, and what you’ll need it to be useful for.
When you try to make choices for your future self with your present preferences, you’re building traps to fall into down the road – lots of places to fail and to fall short of arbitrary expectations. It also misses the point of the present entirely! Your job is not to make future choices now, it’s to make present choices well so that you create yourself as a person you trust to make great once whenever they’re called for. If you’re willing to state your values, make choices, and evaluate them against your values, you’ll get really good at it. It’s practice for becoming someone you can trust with your future.
Play today’s game. Be it it’s the WLC or any other game. The future is a place you’ll eventually get to – use your choices to wind up somewhere you want to go. And, watch out for imagining you know what you’ll want when you get there. The only choices you can really make are the ones that are right in front of you.
Don’t worry, the future will be here soon enough. Be ready for it.
