All I Had Left

The semi-final match of the Women’s US Tennis Open tonight between the ever-elegant stateswoman of tennis, Venus Williams, and the (re)up-and-comer (after coming back from foot surgery in January), Sloane Stevens, was a great one. Well, the first two sets were odd blow-outs where each woman won one. The deciding third set was a barn-burner. It was neck in neck, serve for serve, shot for amazing shot. In the end, Stevens was a bit more athletic, pulling off gutsy shots that landed in.┬áVenus left the stadium to a standing ovation, Stevens among those standing and applauding.

In the post interview with Stevens — who still seemed a bit stunned — a reporter asked how she pulled off that third set against Williams. Stevens talked about coming back from the injury not that long ago. She said, “It came down to fight. When I couldn’t rely on my fitness [or any other come-back shortfalls], all I had left was fight. That I could do.That’s what I had.”

I can’t tell you how much this speaks to me personally. And maybe it’s something you can use during the next competition day or mental toughness day: When your lungs are failing or you’re sore, fatigued, and tired maybe remember that what you do have left is fight. We all have that. Some of us access it better than others, but it doesn’t mean you can’t practice accessing it better. Pull out your fight when you need it, when it’s hard to rely on anything else, knowing that it is definitely in you.
