ATHLETE PROFILE: Alek E.
Hometown: Santa Monica, CA
When did you first start training at CFLA?: July, 2010
Favorite WOD: Murph
Least Favorite WOD: Pretty sure I am going to hate Eva but as of now it was 3 rounds 800m 30 dumbell squat clean 30 burpees. That one tore me up!!!!!
Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I have been surfing and swimming for most of my life. In high school I did cross country, soccer, and 3 years of basketball. In college I played 2 years of rugby and started weight lifting (sadly not weightlifting) between my classes.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? My college rugby coach, Nick Massman, was a trainer for Crossfit San Luis Obispo. Most of our rugby workouts were crossfit workouts. I loved the intensity and I remember how our team outran and outplayed almost every team we played. I don’t remember the name of one of my first WODs but I think it was a variation on Nicole. It was AMRAP 20 mins pullups, but between every set of pullups I had to do 50 squats. It was a great workout but I was ridiculously sore after, couldn’t walk properly or bend my arms straight for a week, no joke. Funny thing was I was also smiling that whole week. From then on I’ve been hooked.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Since joining CFLA I have increased my pushups by 15, I can do 21 kipping pullups, broke my 1 1/2 mile running time by over a minute, and about a week ago I did my first strict muscle up. Oh, I am also starting to see my abs for the first time ever
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? I feel so much more centered, energetic, and peaceful than I did before I joined CFLA. It truly has been amazing. My confidence has shot through the roof and I feel like I have been a great deal happier in the last few months than I have been in a long time.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: The Fran challenge finals was one of my favorites. The culmination of all my hard work and destroying my PR felt great and the camaraderie I feel from all my fellow crossfitters made that saturday a very special day for me. Another was the Christina WOD a few weeks ago. I thought it was a beautiful thing to come together in solidarity against a horrible situation. There’s an rx kettlebell’s worth of heart in CFLA and I think we showed it that day.
Any advice for people just getting started? Show up, show up, show up. The rest will take care of itself. Listen to the coaches, peers, and the cheers and claps from those watching. Don’t listen to the little voice that tells you that you can’t. If a WOD scares you it means you HAVE to show up and do it.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I try to surf whenever I can and spend time playing basketball and hiking with friends. I’ve been getting into the whole paleo nutrition thing and so lately I’ve been trying to do a bunch of reading on the subject.
