Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I played high school football and basketball but then dropped off from sports through college. After school, flag football got me back on the field and I was intermittent with my workouts until I found Crossfit. The variety and the group dynamic made me a lot more interested in continuing to work out — so much so that I felt fine paying WAY more than I said I ever would for fitness classes.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? My friend followed the main Crossfit site just doing whatever he could at home and mentioned it to me. I knew that approach wasn’t for me but when I went to the first CFLA class I really enjoyed the challenge to complete exercises I hadn’t tried often (hello, pull-ups). The first WOD involved lots of jumping lunges and it felt tiring but afterward, when I couldn’t get out of my car, I thought: “If it’s like this every day I can’t do it…” But it got better!

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? My overall muscle tone has become more firm and my weight is in control. Mostly, I just feel more capable of many kinds of exercises. A good deal of confidence has come with the training. I have also maintained a better diet, and I understand my food better.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? As mentioned before, the confidence… and I have enjoyed that Crossfit was something I identified for myself and I have kept doing it… even when it doesn’t fit my schedule right, or when I’d like to take a break… having the constant expectation of myself has been great.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: Getting my first string of 10 kipping pullups, running my first 10k on a morning when I didn’t expect to do it, getting my first muscle-up, cheering for people who don’t think they can finish and then seeing their face when they do.

Any advice for people just getting started? Don’t make any judgements about Crossfit until after the first month.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I’m a screenwriter, and I also help develop film projects with other writers from books, plays or other sources. An avid game player, I love to get people together for board games or the like. September is the best month because NFL starts. February is the worst because that’s when it ends. My cousin is a famous chef, so I love to cook!
