Tell us about you sports & fitness background: Very little! I never played any sports in high school. In college, I started jogging a little and going to the gym. My workout included 5-8# bicep curls and step arobics, with an occasional spin class sprinkled in because I didn’t want to “bulk up.” Ha! In 2007, I ran a half marathon. From then on, I was always looking for the next thing, and tried different classes, but nothing stuck or kept my intellectual or physical interest.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? One of my clients attended CrossFit Hollywood and came to sessions talking about her WODs. I was intrigued. When I researched the main site, I learned that CFLA was down the street from me. I was intimidated when I first joined… for the first few months. I wanted to stand in the back and watch. My first WOD included Squat Cleans. I had no clue what that was, or why they were important to my life. I was totally lost. I left feeling incredulous, mixed with a sense of shock, pride, and confusion that I had just signed up for THIS!
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Stronger and leaner everywhere. Much better endurance. Confidence to lift (or try) anything. Greater mental acuity and focus.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? I have more focus in other activities. I’m humbled. I feel capable of trying new sporting activites (kayaking) and relate CrossFit to my therapy training. CrossFit and my therapeutic modality (Gestalt) go hand-in-hand.
