Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I started playing tennis and running as a wee one, softball and lacrosse through my early teens, but basketball was, by far, my favorite sport as a child. All girls’ catholic high school was actually my hiatus from athletics and dancing in slow motion at Grateful Dead shows became my sport. Yep, that’s right! Luckily, I straightened myself out and dedicated myself to running and yoga up until my intro to CrossFit. Oh, and I can play a decent round of golf
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? Gosh, I really don’t remember the full details of my first WOD. Michael was coaching and there was definitely Olympic lifting involved. I remember him saying, “CrossFit isn’t for the weak of heart,” which made me want to punch him and also to work a lot harder. There is a reason I asked Michael to be my coach when Becca moved to Portland I appreciate a good push.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? My body is a big block of muscle and mobility, a term I had never heard before CrossFit, has become more important than ever. My diet is great. I am definitely not paleo, but consume far less grains and sugar than I ever have. Everything I put in my mouth effects my energy and performance.
The most crucial changes I’ve experienced since I started CrossFit are my body strength, awareness and continued recovery from a life threatening DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and pulmonary embolism in 2007, which required stent placement in the hip. I have a rare condition called May-Thurner Syndrome, where the left iliac vein is compressed by the right iliac artery, increasing the risk of (DVT) in the left leg. My vascular surgeon told me, in all likelihood, I would be on Coumadin for life, never regain full use of my left leg, and suffer from phlebitis. Not true! My reality is that I do experience a lack of sensation in areas of my left leg effecting my range of motion but I am a success story on all accounts. My body continues to rewire its neural pathways and I celebrate every fitness hurdle I have jumped. My athletic confidence and mental strength are soaring.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? I can exercise anywhere. CFLA is my community and I have never really been a “joiner.” I LOVE my fellow athletes and feel a tremendous amount of support athletically and personally. We’re a hodge podge family and I never expected such a gift.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: Being part of Team CFLA- participating in the Gauntlet and the Open. I like competition and I enjoy performing well. Victory is fun and finally getting the hang of kipping pull ups is a HUGE victory. Just ask my friend, Coach Kenny Kane.
Any advice for people just getting started? Be patient, very patient. Listen and be present. Check your ego at the door and try not to muscle the shit out of every movement
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I have two amazing little girls, ages 2 and 4. They are my hobby, but if I had the time and money I would be traveling all over the world, taking pictures. I still plan to do so, but for now, I am perfectly happy enjoying a glass of red wine amongst friends and family.
