Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I was in the basketball team in 5th grade but my overprotective parent thought it was safer to stay home than to partake in school sports. My brothers on the other hand were allowed to do anything, so I took every opportunity to join the guys. I played a lot of football, basketball, and street hockey. I was never competitive, nor did I care for the rules of the game, but I loved to play. I stopped playing sports in my later teens and became a gym rat after high school. If I could turn back the time, I would have been a wide receiver in high school and ran track.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? Just months before joining CF, my time spent in the gym became unhealthy. I rode my bike to the gym and worked out twice a day. I saw no results or my friends. One of my friends, who thought I needed to get a life, said that crossfit would suit my craziness. So I looked into it. I don’t recall my first WOD. I do remember feeling excited, so excited that I woke up really early for the 7am class. I then understood what it was like to have a love/hate relationship with something.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Health and fitness was totally redefined for me after CF. I have accepted that I will never be (and never want to be) back to what I use to be – thin and weak. Cutting out all that “healthy” stuff like whole wheat, low fat, no fat BS and incorporating the CF/Paleo lifestyle has improved my health in so many ways. I am now stronger mentally and physically.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? I’ve gained my confidence back and refocused on my priorities. In 2008, I moved to LA and disconnected from everything and everyone I knew to focus on myself. It ended up being counterproductive. CF pushed me to be better, to live a better life and to be a better person. I’ve gained fundamental skills that I can take with me wherever I go.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: Meeting my husband of course! Just being a part of this community and meeting everyone makes every moment a CFLA moment.

Any advice for people just getting started? It’s okay if you start to hate yourself and curse yourself out during the WODs. You’re not alone. I do it all the time.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I love exploring new restaurants, walking to the beach and to the bookstore with my husband. We live a simple, happy life.
