Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I really didn’t have much of a fitness background prior to joining Crossfit in June 2009. In fact, when I joined, I was in the worst shape in my life. I was 45lbs over weight and hadn’t really exercised for 4 years. Prior to that, I would get into running for 6 months and then I would sustain some sort of injury and stop for a long time before I would get back into it.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? My first WOD was Erin on 6/8/2009. I was really tired after the warm-up 1200M run. Then we did the normal 15 minute warm-up (bear crawls, push-ups, etc.) and I really thought that was the WOD. But no…
Erin was 5 rounds of 15 DB Cleans (I did 15#) and 21 pullups. It took me 25 mins. I was very sore for several days after that.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Most people don’t recognize the person in my into picture from June 2009. I started losing weight fairly quicky, 10lbs. the first month, and then about 7.5 lbs. per month for 5 months until I reached 155-160lbs. My first 6 months were about losing the weight, then I concentrated on getting better at crossfit. My appearance is very different from when I started, but more importantly, my health is much better. I recently had some blood work done and all of my numbers were optimal.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? I started crossfit to get in shape, but I really didn’t know what that meant to me. I really wasn’t expecting my physical appearance changed so drastically. Also, keeping up with my kids is a breeze now.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: My favorite times at CFLA are feeling the support from all of the athletes when finishing a WOD and the personal attention from the coaches.

Any advice for people just getting started? Start slow. Start really slow and know that it takes time to get to where you want to be. Not a month, but many months. I’ve been crossfitting for over a year and a half and I have never pushed myself further than what I was physically ready for. I’ve not been injured at crossfit and I credit this approach for that.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? My personal time outside of crossfit is concentrated on being a father to my 5 and 6 year-old boys. Being in shape to experience life with them is wonderful.
