Check Your Ego at the Door
It has been said over and over again. And if you think you left it, and you think the people around you didn’t, check in. If you’re comparing yourself it may just be to cover up that you didn’t either.
Such was my sad tale last Thursday. Courtney wrote it on the board because of all the swagger going on around choosing weights for Cosgrove’s Evil 8. But I left it. I was being reasonable. Except I shouldn’t have been doing it at all.
With persistent shoulder pain for 3 months (give or take) I pretty much verbally bullied my doc into giving me the “OK” I needed to hear to go work out. Keep in mind we started at “You should lay off it for 6 months.” What she ended up saying, in so many words, was “I know you’re going to do whatever you want, so go do whatever you want.” Permission granted.
Fast moving barbells, bad shoulders, wanting to “win”…I probably don’t need to go into what happened next. And now I’m pretty much gonna have to not use it for 6 months. Yeah.
So, check yourself before you wreck yourself. To paraphrase Greg Glassman, “Rest when you need to. Because if you don’t, your body will do it for you. And when it does, it will do it catastrophically.”
Ego against physics. You can’t win. Check it at the door.
