Learning how to clean (to take an object from the ground up to chest/shoulder height) is as functional as it gets. Practicing with different objects like medicine balls, dumbbells, dowels, boxes, weight plates, etc. will burn in the neuromuscular pattern so that regardless of what you are picking up, lifting using a clean is as easy and natural for you as lifting a fork to your mouth.
