“No man steps in the same river twice, because it is not the same river and he is not the same man.”

This quote is from the philosopher Heraclitus, whose principle belief was that ever-present change is the only constant in the universe. Consider the truth in his words – your daily commute may take you along the same path every day (depending on what Waze decides), but you never share it with precisely the same group of other commuters. You may re-test a workout you have done a dozen times before (like Karen), but the conditions in the gym are never exactly the same. Every moment in your life is unique, because the world around you is constantly changing and so are you.

When I think about my life and especially the recurring experiences in it, Heraclitus’ aphorism always raises in my mind the question of whether I am simply changing or whether I am growing. Is the “new” me, the “changed” me that steps into the riverbed again a different guy because I have learned something new on my journeys? Or have I just grown older while repeating the same patterns? I have found that considering that question as I go about my daily routine is helpful in evaluating whether I am as mindful and fully present in each unique moment of my life as I could be, and I invite you to take some time this week and consider your daily routine through the philosopher’s lens. Are you just going through the motions? Or are you learning, adapting, and taking time to appreciate the uniqueness of every moment in your life?
