I recently read a 2014 article called “7 Strange Questions That Help You Find Your Life Purpose.” It’s a witty,varied approach to a soul-searching subject, but the main question that stood out was the first: “What’s Your Favorite Flavor of Shit Sandwich and Does It Come with an Olive?” What stood out to me most within the answer was this sentence:

Everything sucks, some of the time.

That hit me like a big water balloon of epiphanies. Yes! Nothing is blissful rainbows 100% of the time. Not our most favorite things. Not ourselves. And neither is working toward the things we have as identified as our passions. Training is not pleasurable or uplifting all the time. The dream job takes some sacrifice. Our creative brilliance sometimes makes us feel like we know absolutely nothing. The Whole Life Challenge will not feel blissful the entire 8 weeks.

The author questions how we handle things when our favorite things and important missions get shitty. Do we recognize set backs as temporary, as part of the price for general happiness or for the big picture we want in our lives? Do we stay calm and stay the course? Mainly, do we recognize that maybe these temporary and,hopefully, infrequent dips in energy make the great things about what we love that much more enjoyable?
