“Everything in moderation.”* How often have you said that in your life? I certainly have said it more times than I can count in my memory. Each time I say it, though, I get this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, like I might be selling out on something. I was thinking about it the other day and all of a sudden it occurred to me that it could be one of the deepest-set modern day fallacies in existence.

As you have probably guessed by now, “moderation” is a purely subjective concept. Is eating three Hershey’s bars daily moderate instead of 6 or 7? In one world yes, in another, no way! When it comes to things like drugs, very infrequently do we say that a little heroin is moderate, right? Someone could make the argument for themselves, however.

When it comes down to brass tacks, can you be honest with yourself about WHY you make the assertion? Is it truly a well-planned and thoughtfully executed lifestyle practice or is it an excuse? It’s fine if it’s an excuse. It only becomes sticky when you tell yourself (or anyone asking for advice) that it is a well-planned and thoughtfully executed practice. It is a sleep inducing principle. “Sleep inducing” meaning that it saps your awareness for what you are really up to and how you plan to accomplish what is really important to you.

When looked at from an evolutionary standpoint, nothing really changes inside the scope of “moderate.” Extremes are needed for adaptation even to be important. This may suggest (not prove) that extremes are extraordinary valuable. If you want to break on through to the other side it may take stepping into the discomfort of the extreme.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying moderation is bad. It helps, however, to know what you want to accomplish inside of it. If you are aiming for excellence or virtuosity somewhere in your life, something besides moderation may be called for.

* Also beware the dangerous cousin of “everything in moderation” called “you only live once!” or “YOLO” for short. While technically arguably true, that “once” will hopefully last for 80-90+ years with thousands if not millions of iterations of “once.” If you abuse every “once” who knows WHERE you could end up.
