200m runHow do you achieve the desirable yet elusive “balance” in your life? Does it just sit out there like a ripe apple staring you in the face, but just slightly out of reach? What steps are you taking to achieve it? I was reading an article from Success Magazine called Life Balance is a Choice (thanks Steve Rakow!), and realized that achieving balance is SKILL that takes PRACTICE. For me, it’s easier to see something like this if I put it in context of physical movements… like a handstand. If getting a handstand resides in your mind as something that “might be nice” someday, you will NEVER move toward getting it. However, if you break it down into a series of movements, and then choose actions to take every day, practicing those movements, at some point you WILL get your handstand.

Here’s a thought… If you want balance in your life, identify ONE thing that would definitely move you in that direction. It could be really small… like committing to being home at a certain time one day a week… or shutting your phone / blackberry off from the time you get home to the time you leave for work the next morning. Something that isn’t too major and that you could do. Once you master that skill, you can move on to the next. But if you truly want balance, you’re going to have to work at it by taking actions that move you in that direction.
