Goals or Habits… what works for you?
I’ve been thinking a lot about my goals for 2009… I have yet to get past the “thinking” stage because for me, creating and writing them down is a painful process – one that I do NOT look forward to each year. The funny thing about that is that goals really seem to work for me – for the past 5 years, I’ve written them down, and 90% of the time, I’ve achieved them (maybe I’m shooting too low – or maybe I’m getting practice succeeding?) Evidently I’m not alone in either the difficulty of writing them or their effectiveness, read The Thing about Goals.
Then yesterday, I read one sentence in another blog The Power of Less, “Don’t make resolutions, create a new habit. It lasts longer.” That got me thinking – I can do that (after all, I am at day 92 of the burpee challenge)… and for some reason, this felt easy – read 10 pages of a book every day. I’m still going to set my ’09 goals… but having a commitment to an easy habit – powerful! I’m curious… which works for you – goals, a habit, or both?
