How To Re-Invigorate, Excite and Bring Joy to Your Training

– partner (b) starts 30 thrusters after partner (a) finishes 30 thrustersWhat are the things you need to do, buy, or join to excite yourself enough to train the way you should be training? For me, one way is with technology. There’s nothing like my new gps watch that is waterproof, shows my distance and laps in the pool, gives me all sorts of heart rate data, and tracks my speed, pace, distance and elevation on a run and bike (thanks, Garmin 910xt). I love putting the watch on, messing with all the controls, and, most importantly, I love getting the data and seeing it once uploaded onto the website. And in order to get the data… yes, I’ve got to train!
Is the watch expensive? Depends on the context. I’d say it’s really expensive if all I got was just another big digital watch. However, if it’s something that brings me an incredible amount of nerdy joy and excitement (it does), and moves me further toward my Triathlon goal in October (it has), and it get’s me excited to get out on the road to do something that I’ve spent thousands of hours already doing over the course of my life (it is), well then, I’d say it’s relatively cheap.
What are the things that you need to do to excite yourself? Buying new clothes, gear, shoes? Picking up an iPod shuffle or a new set of earphones? Joining a swimming, running or cycling club? Simply scheduling to on group rides with friends? What is it that re-energizes you when it comes to getting yourself out there on the practice field, in the pool, on the road?
