July 4th and Family Fun

I returned this afternoon from ten days back on the east coast, visiting friends and family.  I was able to spend a good portion of the trip with my entire family at our vacation home in the Poconos, PA.  The house was CHAOS, with eight kids ranging from 3-17 years old, and six adults.  On the second to last night as we sat around the fire, I asked the kids what they were grateful for, and most of the answers, particularly this little guy Austin with my sister Kelly, said family. 

As I sat outside by the fire, played corn hole, or went out on the boat, I tried to remember mindfulness and to take a deep breath.  I took a turn at water skiing, and immediately felt the exhilaration and the feeling of being ALIVE.  I got to watch my nieces and nephews go tubing, and to see the smiles on their faces was priceless. 

We sometimes take our families for granted, so during this trip, I tried to take it all in.  The next time you’re with your family, make sure to remind them and yourself how truly lucky we all are. 

I also reminded myself on several occasions of how fortunate we are to live in this great country.  While there are tragedies happening around the world, we have the opportunity to live in freedom.  Some people don’t have the chance to follow dreams, to practice the religion of their choice, or to even eat a decent meal.  As I sat at the dinner table on the porch surrounded by nature, I once again took a deep breath and acknowledged that the USA is AWESOME.
