What If We Just Kept Our Resolutions?

 In Blog, Uncategorized

Yea, I said the word resolutions. What of it?? Listen, I know the word has become dirty in the last decade. And I think that’s because we have often made goals that we think we ought to make. Or we make ones based on what we think we should be according to some b.s. social construct; our weight for example — or how much money we should be making, etc. Those type of resolutions feel …joyless, frankly, as does anything that feels put upon us. No wonder we don’t keep them. Your weight is perfectly fine and now that that’s out of the way, what do you really want? Do you want to study Italian and then take wine tour in Tuscany? Do you want to learn how to do parkour? Do you want to run a marathon? (I mean, do you really or is that something you think you should do?)

With that in mind, what if we just kept our resolutions in 2018? Like, eff it, I’m totally doing this. We have the ability to do what we say we’re going to do, right? Whether they’re called resolutions or goals or intentions. What if we wrote stuff down that made our insides race a little or made us laugh with the greatness of it. And, god, I don’t mean anything shame-inducing or all those things that we (other people) think we should be doing or being or weighing for effs sake, but things we’d really like to do or be. And then we made an action plan because yea, we’ll have to actually work at it even on the most joy-filled idea. And then we do our best to stick to a plan that’s pretty realistic but still a stretch. And when we lag in our plan — because everything has a lagging point even when it’s fun– we tell some people we are lagging and we ask for a little shove out of the lag hole because that’s what friends do —  and then we remember those things we wrote down that put some air in our sails when we thought about the possibility of achieving them. Yea, what if it was like that? I’m all in with a context like that.
