400m runWhen is the last time you saw something you really wanted to learn how to do, and you actually took it on. I don’t mean just saying something like, “Wouldn’t it be nice if someday I could…” No. I mean really taking it on. The bear in the video below (no, it’s not a fake) has learned a skill called “spinning a stick”… pretty cool skill if you ask me! But an important distinction between the bear (or any animal) and us… he doesn’t have consciousness… he probably just found the stick one day, picked it up, accidentally spun it, got rewarded somehow (food, applause), and figured out if he kept doing it he’d get the reward. What makes us special and different from animals, is that we actually have the power to create, choose our direction, and be responsible and conscious of that choice.

So here’s an idea… go out and practice being human. Get present to something you’d really like to learn how to do… a new skill… in ANY area (CrossFit related or not). Choose to take it on… and then take the first step toward doing it (order a book, hire a teacher/coach, buy a tool/instrument, schedule a class, find a partner). Don’t wait for life to just “happen” or something (like the bear’s stick) to just fall in your lap. Be responsible for choosing. Unfortunately it does mean you have to stick your neck out, and be at risk.

My skill is learning how to play guitar. I’ve let my practice slip over the past 3 months, but am going to recommit. What’s yours?
