Mom’s Coaching Game

Despite her passing over a year ago my mom continues to inspire (and simultaneously frustrate) me. Over the weekend I was up in Santa Rosa going through stacks, and piles of things that needed sorting at her place.  I came a across a box of VHS tapes with some high school soccer games. In the sleeve of each VHS tape were notes of what I did well and mostly what needed improvement.  At the time I didn’t even know that she was going Jon Gruden on me staying up late watching videos, taking notes and thinking about how I could be my best self… Now I realize that’s simply what coaches do.

Mom changed thousands of lives in her time because she never stopped coaching.  More importantly, she never stopped caring. I realize now that she coached because she cared.
