12 Good Mornings (bodyweight – for explosive extension)I took an awesome trip to Puerto Rico last week. One of the things that I went into it thinking was that I wanted to make sure that I was active or even working out during the trip, but I in no way wanted to commit to doing “workouts.” For one thing, I wasn’t going to be near a gym. But for another thing, I just didn’t want to; I wanted to experience both the freedom and luxury of being on vacation combined with the energy of being physical. It turned out not to be a problem at all. It was actually really fun, and most of the time, I wasn’t even considering what I was doing a proper “workout.”

One day we walked up and down the hills of Old San Juan. If you’ve ver been there, you know it’s steep and trekking through them all morning is as good as any recovery jog. Other days I body surfed, hiked in the rain forest, swam around small islands in the Caribbean, and sailed. Let me tell you, hands on sailing was about as close to a workout you can get while not being in the gym!

The more I do, the more I know that workouts are just the tip of the iceberg. In World Class Fitness in 100 Words, Greg Glassman writes that part of the prescription for fitness is to “regularly learn and play new sports.” I’m starting to realize that this is not a suggestion! It is actually an integral part of being a master of my body. Workouts aren’t wrong, but they are in some sense “theoretical” movement. They are training for practical movement. All the twisting, turning, off balance hustling you do in playing a sport is what can tie your training together. It may be that the best thing to take training to the next level is to follow that maxim — Regularly learn and play new sports. You can be fit either way, no question. But how much fun are you willing to have?

Kenny could learn a thing or two about having fun, don’t ya think?
