Today is my birthday. I turn 39. Or rather, I turned 39 at 12:01am, I guess. I’m 39 now.
So far it’s good. I’m rather liking these few hours of 39.
I started doing CrossFit back in 2005 when I thought it was cool to slam myself into the wall every workout. I thought it was cool to slam myself to the wall in everything I did in life, actually. You can only do that for so many years, I discovered. At 39 I’m very selective. I’m selective about how I spend my time. I’m selective about how I feed myself. I’m selective about how I work out, and even when I work out…or even if I work out.
The privilege of age, I’ve decided, is the ability to make wise selections. I’m not picky and I’m not a snob, I’m just making sure everything I do is worth the time and effort. It’s got to pass my litmus test of bringing good things and good things only to my life, health, and happiness. And if it doesn’t pass that litmus test, it doesn’t happen.
So, I don’t wait in line for breakfast with the hipsters on weekends. And I don’t eat “junk” food that isn’t the best darn junk food on the planet. And I workout when and how my body is suggesting to me is appropriate. My body and I have conversations now, about how we should treat each other, rather than me punishing it and then getting upset about its misbehaviors.
At 39 I spend a lot more time being nice to my body, being nice to my mind, and being in touch with my soul. They’re all linked. And it only took me 39 years to figure that out.
