21 pull upsSaturday was the big day – the Long Beach Sprints. After a couple months of preparation, much fuss about nutrition, and the deadline of the weigh-in, I made it down to Long Beach at 8:00am and successfully weighed in under the 135# cut off. I spent my day cheering for teammates (including CFLA’s own Emily Hacker) and raced my event at 2:45pm. I won’t lie — I was nervous. There were many moments during the day that I thought to myself, “Why did I tell anyone I was doing this?” It would have been so much easier if I just showed up at the gym on Monday with a pleasant surprise, rather than feel like everybody was waiting to hear how I did.

But that’s just it — I would not have done it without you guys. If I hadn’t told you, I would not have succeeded. It is because of the enthusiasm and support of each and every one of you who texted me, Facebooked me, emailed me, and spoke to me in class, that this all worked out. All the times you checked in with me and encouraged me, all the times you were excited for me, especially on the days I was not so excited — all those moments were a contribution. All the words of wisdom that you gave to me were in my head for those eight minutes — ranging from “strength and ease” to “balls out, baby.”

And it DID all work out — I placed 2nd and beat my old personal record by eight seconds! I finished with a time of 8:05 and I even had fun doing it. It felt great (until the last 200m, that is!) and I raced faster than I expected. I was focused and determined and it all came together. I’m not sure I’ve ever felt more proud of myself, not just for that moment, but for all the weeks that led up to it. So, thank you, all of you, for helping me get there. Your love and support has been truly overwhelming.
