400 m runHow much time do you spend playing? And what does it mean “to play?” As I was reading Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul by Stuart Brown, MD, I was struck by the notion that play is a “state of mind vs. an activity”. Does this mean that literally ANYTHING could be classified as “play” as long as you had the proper state of mind? That is a very liberating thought… work, workouts, training, spreadsheets, picking up dog poop… all could be considered play… in fact, I can think of instances of all of these where they have been drudgery at one time, and light, fun, and playful at others (yes, even picking up dog poop!)

In relation to CrossFit, my state of mind is more about light, fun, easy… play… and when I happen to do well in a workout, it’s fun. When it stops being fun and play-like, it’s time for me to hang it up… or change it so it becomes fun again. What about you?
