Weightlifting – whether the slow lifts (deadlift, bench press, or squat) or fast lifts (clean, jerk, snatch) – is a critical component to your overall capacity as a functional human being and athlete. This is not the message you’ll here when you walk into a 24 Hour Fitness. Why is it so important? The neurological and physical pathways that are stimulated by weightlifting, cannot be stimulated any other way – period. And it is my belief that as human beings, we should all maintain the ability to lift things (like your child, shopping bag, or suitcase), and to move things explosively (a ball, another person, or yourself) for as long as possible in life. It’s easy to take these abilities for granted now, when you can do them without thinking… however, that won’t always be the case. So while weightlifting will most certainly make you a more functionally capable person and athlete, you can also think of it as “quality of life” insurance.
