Re-Do Decisions

Re-Do Decisions

I read this recently: “At the core of fear is a belief. At the root of a belief is a decision you made. A lot of these decisions were made early in life, and sometimes they had nothing to do with reality.”

This suggests that some – if not many – of our decisions were formed when we were young, when we were influenced by outside forces before we could shape them ourselves with thought and understanding. There’s good news though. We can re-do our decisions. As scary as that sounds, it’s absolutely true. And that means about anything: career direction, relationships, and health decisions to either undo or move forward.

I had a boss many years ago who had put herself in the online dating pool in her mid-forties after her divorce. She was on a particularly bad date where her date incessantly talked about himself and the few times she spoke, he downplayed what she said. After one too many snide comments, she put her napkin in her plate – they hadn’t ordered dinner yet, only appetizers – and she said calmly but abruptly, “The good news is that I’m old enough to know that I don’t have to spend another minute with bad company.” And she left. She didn’t look back. She didn’t worry about repercussions from the guy. She simply made a decision that served her better. Hearing her story when I was in my twenties was a revelation. I have to remind myself still of the story from time to time.

Often conquering a fear has to do with making a decision. The new decision can be scary, but it will serve us so much better than waiting in the fear, hoping things will change or wishing someone will save us. Fear is usually just a call for us to put our napkin in our plate and make a better decision.
