S.M.A.R.T. Goals

I know, to some people, that goal setting is more like wishing upon a star, throwing pennies into a wishing well or closing your eyes when you blow out your birthday cake… very pie-in-the-sky. If you wish hard enough maybe things will happen like you want them to.

Let me share with you what happened to us.

January 2008, one year ago, Andy and I sat down and made a list of goals for CFLA for the next 12 months. From where we were sitting, regarding the business, the goals were kinda out there, perhaps unrealistic (personally, I operate like that a lot – it gets me motivated). Jim Collins, Author of GOOD TO GREAT, call this type of goal setting B.H.A.G. meaning Big Hairy Audacious Goals. Jim’s research supports this is way the world’s best run companies set goals to dominate their market.

We wrote our list of unrealistic (which is what it felt like at the time ) goals and kinda forgot about it… honestly. Becca found the scratch paper which we wrote the goals down on and… holy crap! we hit every goal by OCT! and most by 125% of what we thought was unrealistic. So, the maybe the saying “shoot for the stars, you might just hit the moon” has merit… then again you just might hit the stars also.
