Shedding Layers

 In Blog

In Yoga School (that’s not the real name, but that’s what I call it) I am learning some pretty ancient and spiritually philosophical lessons alongside all the awesome poses. Though mystical in many ways, I feel the philosophies make logical sense — to me at least. For example: It is taught that the reason we do yoga and meditation and breathing practices is for balance at the surface but at the core it’s to shed the built-up veils that hide our true self. We are born perfect — our true nature is good, but we’ve mucked it up with a shit-ton of things. Our true, light-filled, good and perfect selves have been layered with oh so many things like: doubt, judgement, ignorance, anger, greed, selfishness, hate (and on), which has not just stripped us of compassion and generosity (toward self and others), but these layers cloud our perceptions and keep us from our personal, true purpose. It’s not that we have to change to become better people, but rather we are already our best version. It’s simply buried under some crap. (We probably came into this world with some karmic layers as well, but that’s a whole ‘nother esoteric story.)

Ok, so there’s that. But what I learned in the Movement & Mobility 102 course this weekend is that our bodies are no different. We are born — barring problems at birth — with fairly perfect bio-mechanics. The Universe or God or Fill In Your Blank designed a pretty stellar human being mechanically speaking. However, we’ve mucked that up, too. Modern posture, dictated by modern technology and a work-driven culture, has added some dark layers to the perfect specimens we were born to be. Some of these layers are disastrous. With an active fitness plan that emphasizes great mechanics (to the best of our ability right now) AND an active mobility plan, we can strip away some of these layers and work ourselves back to perfect humans — or at least to a rather awesome level.

It’s quite possible that in this lifetime we won’t ever get back to that illuminated god-like being that was drafted in the Universe’s workshop no matter how much meditation and lacrosse ball rolling we do. That’s ok. But if we can give this layer-shedding thing an honest shot, I’m sure our experience here will be so much better than if we ignore the existence of these layers — or more importantly if we ignore the fact that we all have real and truly great stuff deep down and not so deep down.
