1 Push PressI’m not sure how many of you know the story of Sam. I’ve known Sam since the day he was born. I first met Sam when he showed up at CrossFit LA.

A while back, a couple years ago now, I guess, I received an email from a Sam Martin inquiring as to any open internship positions at CFLA. Or rather, our generic email address received an email from a Sam Martin and I happened to be the one who answered the message.

I asked him to send in his resume and he quickly did. I noticed first he was from Michigan. Then I noticed his name was written out as Samuel Work Martin. Something clicked in my memory. I emailed Sam back and said, “This might sound completely random, but I have to ask, is your mother’s name Susan?”

The world is a tiny place, it seems. Sam’s mother was indeed named Susan. The same Susan who was my father’s supervisor back when we were all living in Michigan, decades earlier. I remember the day Sam was born. I remember the teddy bear we bought him. My father named him Aloysius, which I’m not even sure Sam knows is actually my father’s confirmation name. And in fact, when Sam emailed me back to confirm Susan was his mother, he mentioned Aloysius himself, and how he was dearly loved right up until his untimely demise on the DC metro system.

So many little things. To end up in the same city. To end up both doing CrossFit. For me to answer those generic emails. For me to remember my father’s boss’s name from twenty plus years prior. For Sam to have loved Aloysius and not just have him be one of many toys I’m sure he received upon his birth.

You could say life is random, but I can vouch for the fact it is not. In that email exchange, in that moment of meeting Sam, I can tell you we were both exactly where we were meant to be.
