What Do You Mean Rest??
Here we go again, another injury from flag football. About two months ago, I dove for a catch, and when I came down, I landed on my hyperextended wrist, OUCH! It wasn’t an immediate sharp pain, but I knew something was wrong, most likely a sprain. I kept playing that day, and didn’t exactly lay off WOD’s at the gym either.
So, fast forward to yesterday, and I took a visit to the doctor. No broken bones, GREAT, however a potential ligament tear, which means this sucker ain’t going to heal easily. The doctors recommendation, REST, and stay away from what aggravates the wrist and causes pain. Makes a bit of sense right?
I am stubborn, I feel like we all are to some degree. We don’t want to listen when we are told to rest, to take a few days off, let your body heal. However, as we mature and grow more responsible and wiser, I think this concept of taking care of ourselves comes more naturally.
Over the last few months, I have noticed students listening to their bodies more, taking a day off, modifying a movement, or just scaling back intensity, to what suites them for the particular day. That is what we call being an “elite athlete”. You have the ability to be creative and responsible in your own way in order to make the gains you want to achieve, safely and efficiently.
I will use this as an inspiration as I work towards healing my body, so I can come back 100%.
